A village, not an empire

A village, not an empire

Build an empire. Take over the world. That's what people keep telling me I'm doing.

Wrong story.

I'm not building an empire. I'm building a village. A village I'd want to exist in for every phase of a life. Where everyone, from the warehouse to the pitch room, is treated like family. Where I'd rather hire someone who knows more than me about their craft. Every time.

That's the idea at the center of OMC, OTHR Management Company. We're the village at the center of a family of event and hospitality brands. And the word "village" isn't decoration. It's the whole operating model.

Why empire is the wrong word

The default game most companies play is zero-sum. Kill or be killed. Win or lose. Someone has to lose for you to win. Most of us were raised inside that model, and a lot of us are tired.

Here's the problem with it. People are not binary. You can be excited and anxious in the same hour. The producer running your event flawlessly might be three days out from a hard diagnosis. The client signing the contract might be holding a marriage that's quietly ending. That isn't a flaw in people. That's people.

A company can do one of two things with that truth. Pretend it isn't true and ask everyone to leave the inconvenient parts at the door. Or build a place that can hold the whole person.

We build the second kind. Not because it's nice. Because the work is better when nobody is spending half their energy hiding.

Ambitious without dominating

Grow? Yes. Expand? Yes. Build a community that lasts? Yes. Dominate? No. We don't care about that.

We can be ambitious without dominating. We can be passionate without being unkind. We can disagree and disrupt without disrespecting. There's no internal war here. We protect the team.

In events, you live through real life together. Births and miscarriages. Diagnoses. Divorces. You stand in a ballroom at 5am with someone whose marriage just ended and load-in in two hours. You don't survive any of it with a strategy. You survive it with your village.

For the skeptics

If this reads soft, give me one more line. I came up in the rooms where you swallow the hard week and hit the number. So I get the reflex.

I didn't land here because it looks good on a wall. I landed here because I watched the other way break people I loved and companies I admired. Dominate-or-die doesn't even win on its own terms. It just defers the bill.

So this isn't the soft option. It's the demanding one. It asks more of us, not less. I'm betting the whole company on it.

If we're going to use the word empire, here's mine. It looks a lot more like a village. It's not for everyone. But for the people in it, it feels like home.

That's the empire I'm after. People First.
